jingly jin'gly adj."......從字源上看，Christmas（聖誕節）就是Christ’s Mass（基督的彌撒），是教廷在西元四世紀訂下來的。神聖羅馬帝國的第一個皇帝查里曼大帝（Charlemagne）在西元800年時選定12月25日 即位舉行登基大典，這個日子的神聖性自此受到確立。習俗沿襲至今，卻很少有人記得，聖誕節在1647年英國清教徒執政期間曾被禁止；美國殖民時期的波士頓 在1659至1681年間也一度對聖誕節頒布禁令。
至於教廷又為何把聖誕節訂在12月25日？說法不止一種。其中之一是，這是早期異教徒的冬至（winter solstice），冬至之後，白晝漸長。當時身為異教徒的羅馬人早就把這天訂作太陽的生日，並舉行祭祀典禮，後來教廷也把這天訂為聖誕節，目的是要擴大 慶祝的基礎，讓更多的人能信奉基督教。另一種說法是，根據羅馬曆法，3月25日是春分，基督徒相信地球是在這一天被創造出來的。而信徒們相信耶穌也應該是 在這一天受孕的，所以九個月以後的12月25日剛好就變成耶穌基督的出生之日。
聖誕節有濃厚的宗教意味，那Santa Claus（聖誕老人）又從何而來？其實，Santa Claus一詞源自荷蘭文Sinterklaas，意思就是St. Nicholas。聖誕老人「本尊」St. Nicholas不住在北極，更不住在芬蘭，而是Myra這個地方的主教，時間約為第四世紀，地點在今天的土耳其。St. Nicholas被認為是小孩、商人和旅人的守護聖徒，相傳他曾經幫助過三個小女孩，把金幣塞在她們的襪子裡作嫁妝，讓她們可賴以生活，免於淪落煙花。這 也是把聖誕禮物放在襪子裡面這個習俗的由來。
「聖誕老人」另有一說是Kris Kringle，源自德文，意為「襁褓中的基督」（Christ Child），和今日紅衣白鬍、神情愉悅、挺著大肚子的形象大異其趣，這個改變是經過時間演進的。當時聖誕老人還有一個名字是Father Christmas，所以就變成聖誕老公公了。又因維多利亞女王 （Queen Victoria） 時代的聖誕老人穿的是綠色的衣服，他又成了「北方之神」（Norse God Odin），也就是「森林之神」的象徵。
1773年，Santa Claus這個字第一次出現在美國的報紙。在Washington Irving的筆下，他被描寫成一個胖胖的、笑呵呵的人。1882年，Clement Moore寫了一首詩〈聖尼可拉斯的造訪〉（A Visit from St. Nicholas），把麋鹿和雪橇添加進去。而真正把穿著紅色毛皮大衣的聖誕老人畫出來的則是插畫家Thomas Nast，最早刊登在1930年的哈潑畫報（Harper’s Illustrated）。後來可口可樂用聖誕老人大打形象廣告，奠定他在世人心目中無可取代的地位。現代的聖誕老人無疑是紐約市所創造出來的，因此，紐約成為最有聖誕氣氛的城市，自是理所當然。
聖誕習俗知多少 儀節由來有文章
聖誕樹也有它的典故。它象徵長青 （evergreen），取材於「伊甸園」中的生命之樹，早期有永生（eternal life）之意，日耳曼民族會在這個季節把長青樹搬回家中觀賞。十六世紀德國人馬丁‧路德（Martin Luther）把蠟燭放在樹林的樅樹枝上，然後點燃蠟燭，讓它看起來像是引導人們到伯利恆；到了十九世紀，維多利亞女王和德國的亞伯特王子（Prince Albert）成婚後在宮內用聖誕樹作裝飾，聖誕樹才開始普及。
再說聖誕卡。1843年柯爾爵士（Sir Henry Cole）首度在倫敦製作商業聖誕卡，把Merry Christmas印在卡片上。不過，維多利亞女王早在1840年就開始於皇室使用聖誕卡；美國則要到1953年艾森豪當選總統後，白宮才正式發出聖誕 卡。而第一次把Merry Christmas作為聖誕賀詞，是由一位英國的海軍將軍在1699年開始的。
此外，聖誕花圈是用長青樹枝圈成，代表耶穌蒙難時以荊棘編成的頭冠。葉子邊上尖尖的刺代表荊棘，上面的小紅果子則象徵頭冠上沾到的耶穌的血。
傳唱街頭巷尾、悅耳悠揚的聖誕歌曲，是聖誕期間娛樂民眾、激勵人心不可或缺的要素。十三世紀時，聖方濟（St. Francis of Assisi）為了傳教，將聖誕歌曲排進教堂的吟唱儀式。而我們所熟知的〈O’Come All Ye Faithful〉一直到十八世紀才出現。〈Silent Night〉是1818年在奧地利寫成，美國最具代表性的聖誕歌曲〈Jingle Bell〉到1857年才問世。〈Merry Christmas to You〉和〈Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire〉則是納京‧高（Nat King Cole）在1946年唱紅的。
聖誕節也為電影提供不少題材。James Stewart主演的It’s a Wonderful World、紅髮女星Maureen O’Hara的Miracle on 34th Street，以及Bing Crosby的White Christmas都是膾炙人口的經典之作，無論看上多少遍，都還會深受劇情跟一代巨星的演技感動，是很多人聖誕假期的must-do。在這個紛亂的世界中，能在聖誕假期放下爭奪，讓愛心充滿人間，令人滿心期待。...."
