Once Stigmatized, Food Stamps Find Acceptance

A program once scorned as “welfare” enjoys broad new support from city, state and federal governments and from neighborhood groups that recruit clients.

Today conservatism is stigmatized in American culture as an antiminority political philosophy. In certain quarters, conservatism is simply racism by another name. And minorities who openly identify themselves as conservatives are still novelties, fish out of water.



IT was not so long ago, Neal Zimmerman recalls, that the term home office meant something very different from what it does today. In the early ’90s, when Mr. Zimmerman, a prominent workplace architect with offices in West Hartford, Conn., started designing residential work spaces, most people thought “home office” meant the headquarters of a company. Back then, the very idea of working at home had a certain stigma, except in a few vocations like freelance writing. In the popular imagination, he said, “people who worked from home were usually laid off or couldn’t hold down a job, or were peripheral to the work force.”

Fish out of Water is a fairly popular swimming pool game in the United States and other countries.

Rules

To begin the game, one swimmer must be picked as the game's searcher. This swimmer must close his or her eyes when surfacing from under the water, but, at the same time, he or she is allowed to open the eyes when under the water. The purpose of the game is to catch another swimmer when the other swimmer is out of the pool. When a player suspects another of being out of the pool, they exclaim: "Fish out of water!" Then, the swimmer who got caught must become the next searcher.
There are no winners in the game, as the game is played entirely for fun and pool activity.

Popularity

The game is popular mostly with children, pre-teenagers and teenagers during summer time.

Variations

One variant is the game Marco Polo.
